Everything is a miracle.

There are two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.

-Albert Einstein

I came across this quote a couple weeks ago and let it sit in my document of random thoughts. It’s hard to always live your life as though everything is a miracle. Driving home from my mom’s house a couple weeks ago, I did. Even the trash blowing down the side of the freeway in the autumn sunset was somehow beautiful, the rain on my dirty windshield meaningful.

I’m slowly learning to live this way more often. It requires conscious thought, work, and desire. However, when achieved, everything starts to make a little more sense. Everything is more alive. I have always had little mantras for those moments I most need them. Today is the best day of my life was one for an entire summer. Now they change more frequently. Last week, my students are a gift.Β Yesterday, you are safe.Β Today, everything is a miracle.

  1. Definitely something miraculous about nature…and for you, my sciencey friend, photosynthesis.

Believe it or not I was just thinking about this quote while I drove along the beautiful coastline from Santa Cruz to Half Moon Bay yesterday. So much beauty surrounds us! I love your mantras–can you make a book of them for me (and the world) please?

  3. Beautiful imagery. I smiled when you said it takes conscious thought to be aware of the miracles. It’s taken me so long to learn how to just stop my thoughts and breathe while I take in something as simple as the beautiful hawk circling above the rush hour traffic. Yet I know these things bring me peace. Thanks for the thoughts.

I know exactly what you mean. Lately I’ve been noticing the light shining through the changing leaves while I line the kids up from recess. Something so simple and so easy to miss with all the noise of life. To see a hawk while driving in traffic is a beautiful gift and skill. I know my awareness still needs refinement.

      • I’m a huge believer in signs and omens but in this case I think it was the hawk who made sure I noticed it rather than me being cool enough to stop my own little soundtrack long enough to see it, but, when I did, it really took my breath away and I was reminded that even in the thick of urban/e/ness, there is magic if you are willing to be open to it. Next…. I seek trolls. πŸ™‚
