I said I wanted to sell my dress.
I said I was not sentimental.
No one bought it.
I lowered the price.
Not a single bite.
Minus some weirdo who wanted to wire money from another country…
So, I gave in.
Three years later.
I bought a preservation box,
Wrapped the lace in acid-free paper,
Put a lid over my beautiful dress,
Said good-bye for decades.
Now, I open my closet to see a sad white box that won’t fit under my bed as promised.
Before a stunning gown draped over the door frame,
A happy reminder.
Feels like I put away a chapter of my life,
A year spent planning,
A day I will never forget,
I guess the honeymoon is over.
I am no longer the bride.
The dress is tucked away.
I am the wife.
Need a wedding dress by chance?
I still say wedding dresses don’t belong in boxes.

Thanks Kozo. I was admittedly a lazy seller– I only put it on our local Craigslist. In retrospect, the likelihood of someone looking for a used dress in the exact same size with the exact same taste was a bit of a stretch… Just funny how now I feel weighed down by the box. Much easier to give up our possessions than keep them sometimes.
I love that dress! I spent a year wondering what it looked like, what you were going to look like on that day. So I maybe a bit sentimental and am glad no one bought it. We’ll find a place out of your line of sight to store it :O)

I don’t know if I’m totally off in this suggestion, but I’ve heard of a cool site/app where you can sell items from your closet…it was born out of the idea that some women spend a lot of money on an item they only wear once or twice, so why not re-sell it to other women doing the same thing? Not sure if you’ll find wedding dresses on there, but maybe you can be the first! http://www.poshmark.com

Thanks Nicole– I didn’t think about keeping just a piece of it, what a lovely idea, especially if I ever part with it. For now, the whole thing is in a gigantic box in my closet 🙂
My friend used her veil and part of her dress to make her daughter’s christening gown. I have my own issues with wedding dresses in boxes….so I appreciate your feelings.
I love that idea! And, so interesting that wedding dresses in boxes carry so many emotions. My mom let me wear hers in a class play when I was in fifth grade. I was Desdemona about to be killed by Othello. She and my dad were divorced… I ruined the gown but felt so incredible wearing it, so I guess it went to a good cause 😉
I tried to sell a boxed wedding dress at a garage sale….no interest….just a lot of questions….So it sat under my bed (mine fit!) for a year…a painful reminder of a failed marriage. It ended up at Goodwill, where no one would no the story. Hopefully it was used by someone who needed it.
